It's not so much a look at
the future, but also a look into the past.
Lewis Lancaster is the
Professor Emeritus of Department of East Asian
Languages and Cultures at the University of
Wisconsin. A distinguished scholar of Buddhism,
we are fortunate that Lancaster has made
available his entire one-hour lecture on the
history of Buddhism and its future in the age of
technology. How it made its way from India to
the rest of Asia. Lancaster explains the path
Buddhism took through Korea, on its way to
Japan, as opposed to how many historians
thought, that it was spread from China.
This research is part of the Electronic Cultural Atlas. A
project Lancaster founded to promote worldwide
electronic access to quality research data. The
initiative uses the latest computer technology
to map the spread of various strands of Buddhism
from the distant past to the present.
The lecture was part of the "Burke Lectureship on
Religion & Society" series at the University of
California - Berkeley on April 10, 2008.
